Chapter Twenty

They were outside of London before the city woke, and Darcy was relieved to be out in the country again, even on such an errand as theirs. Richard seemed more relaxed than he had in days, whereas Bingley seemed mostly to appreciate that their speed had slowed. They had a good deal of road to cover, though with the horses it would be easier than in the carriage which would follow behind. Barrow and Filbee had decamped a few days earlier and would be riding back to them with news as they had it.

As they rode, Darcy pulled his horse astride and tried to speak with Richard, but the Colonel was very far away. Darcy was hoping to begin planning an approach should they be fortunate enough to track down the girl and her uncle, but knew that it would be of no use to try to intrude upon Richard’s thoughts. The Colonel rarely fell silent, but when he did there was generally nothing else to do but wait.

Richard rode through the countryside without noticing much about the land around him other than the fact that his cousin Darcy and Charles Bingley were riding nearby. He thought briefly that they were making good time, but to what end? He had felt so sure of his course in London, but now he had doubts. It might be nothing. It probably was nothing. Still, he could not quite persuade himself that this would be a simple case of finding Miss Evelyn Hawke and relaying his tale. That being the case, what the blazes was he doing involving Darcy and his friend so deeply in something like this? They were newlyweds, for heaven’s sake. He should have asked for the use of Darcy’s investigators and just come alone.

He considered what the boy had done for him and shook his head. He had saved men himself. He had been saved before by others. It was the life of a soldier during war. What was it then that made Oliver Hawke different? Perhaps because this time the death had been so personal, as he came from Kent and had spoken well of his cousin Anne. Perhaps it was because the captain had been so young. Perhaps it was that the sister seemed to be in difficulty. Perhaps it was because this was the last such debt of honor he ever intended to owe and he felt a tremendous need to see it satisfied.

He was trying to recall the feeling of staring into the barrel of a French pistol, but there was nothing. He still felt numb, and it was a strange sensation not to feel something, anything about his near death. In the middle of this deliberation, he vaguely understood that Darcy had ridden over to speak to him, but it did not pull him from his reverie. He laughed to himself as he saw the frustration on his cousin’s face as he moved away. Darcy had always been one to plan everything to the last detail.
